President Zardari Calls for Enhanced UN Partnership in Development and Climate Resilience


Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has highlighted the necessity of fortifying Pakistan’s partnership with the United Nations, focusing on areas such as sustainable development, climate resilience, poverty alleviation, education, and social protection.



According to Press Information Department, President Zardari articulated these priorities during a meeting with United Nations Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, Mr. Mohamed Yahya, who was making a farewell visit at Aiwan-e-Sadr. The President underscored Pakistan’s appreciation for its comprehensive cooperation with the UN and reiterated the commitment to collaborate with the UN Country Team to further national development goals.



He acknowledged the UN’s ongoing support for Pakistan, particularly in efforts related to polio eradication, maternal and child health, and nutrition services through programs like the Benazir Nashonuma Programme. Additionally, President Zardari praised the role of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in orchestrating international assistance during major climate-related disasters, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration that aligns with national frameworks and supports government-led disaster responses.



Highlighting Pakistan’s dedication to sustainable development and tackling climate change impacts, President Zardari commended initiatives such as the Living Indus Initiative and Recharge Pakistan. He expressed optimism about the UN’s continued support in mobilizing development and climate finance, confident that progress would persist under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023-27.



Mr. Yahya informed President Zardari of his upcoming appointment as Assistant Secretary General for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, set to commence by September 2026. President Zardari congratulated Mr. Yahya on his new role, extended his best wishes, and assured him of Pakistan’s unwavering support.
