Islamabad: The Government of Pakistan and Google have entered a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the country’s digital transformation, enhance digital skills, and promote AI-driven innovation, with the aim to boost Pakistan’s IT exports and digital economy to $30 billion by 2030.
According to Press Information Department, the MoU was signed in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who hosted a special reception for the visiting Google leadership delegation, including Wilson White, Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy. The event was also attended by Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of empowering youth through modern tools and technology, highlighting the digital transformation underway in Pakistan. Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja noted the government’s efforts over the past two years to modernize digital infrastructure and expand IT skills, describing the event as a milestone in advancing Pakistan’s digital agenda.
Farhan Qureshi, Google Cluster Director for Pakistan, The Philippines, and Thailand, expressed Google’s commitment to unlocking Pakistan’s digital potential and supporting its journey toward a $30 billion digital economy. The MoU includes initiatives such as providing 150,000 Google Career Certificates to Pakistani youth in 2026, offering free access to advanced AI tools like Google AI Plus and Gemini Notebook to students, and establishing a Google AI Centre of Excellence in Islamabad.
The collaboration will also involve using AI to modernize public service delivery under the Prime Minister’s Federal Board of Revenue transformation plan, integrating AI into agriculture for crop monitoring and yield forecasting, and supporting SMEs in expanding globally. A joint task force will be formed to identify challenges and opportunities in IT export growth and enhance human resource skills.
