Islamabad: The Privatisation Commission has announced a significant milestone in the ongoing privatisation of Pakistan’s electricity distribution companies, with robust investor interest in the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO). On the final day for submitting Expressions of Interest (EOIs), eleven prospective investors have expressed their intent to acquire a 51% to 100% shareholding in GEPCO, along with management control.
According to Press Information Department, the interested parties include prominent domestic and international investors such as Aktor Elektrik Enerji Yat?r?mlar? San. ve Tic. A.?. and Genvera Enerji A.?. from Türkiye, Al Sharif Contracting and Commercial Development Company from Saudi Arabia, as well as several leading Pakistani business groups including Engro Energy Limited and K-Electric Limited. This interest follows extensive domestic and international roadshows conducted over the past six months, aimed at showcasing Pakistan’s power-sector reform agenda.
Muhammad Ali, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Privatisation and Chairman of the Privatisation Commission, stated that the strong response to GEPCO’s privatisation reflects investor confidence in the country’s electricity distribution sector. He emphasized the government’s commitment to a transparent and competitive process, which aims to enhance operational efficiency, modernize infrastructure, and ensure reliable power for consumers. The next steps involve evaluating the submitted EOIs and Statements of Qualification, with prequalified applicants gaining access to a Virtual Data Room for detailed due diligence.
GEPCO is part of DISCOs Batch-I, which includes Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) and Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO). The deadlines for EOIs for these companies are set for August and September 2026, respectively. The Privatisation Commission reiterated its commitment to a transparent process that aligns with the Federal Government’s broader power-sector reform objectives.
