Islamabad: The defence agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia has effectively transformed into a security bloc with discussions underway to possibly include other nations such as Egypt and Türkiye, Sardar Masood Khan, a former Pakistani diplomat, said in a recent television discussion.

According to President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Masood Khan emphasized the strategic and defence linkages forming among the nations and highlighted an opportunity for expanding the arrangement to include additional countries like Kuwait and Qatar. The concept, he explained, addresses a longstanding concern among Muslim countries about security and the absence of effective collective protection mechanisms.

Khan underscored the importance of not viewing the emerging regional security architecture solely through a sectarian lens. He argued for a model of Muslim unity where Sunni and Shia-majority countries could maintain constructive relations and resist external attempts to perpetuate sectarian divisions.

On the topic of Iranian relations, Khan noted that Pakistan has kept lines of communication open with Tehran, despite regional tensions. He highlighted efforts to build trust between Iran and the United States, with support from Saudi Arabia for reconciliation.

Khan also observed that Gulf states are diversifying their security partnerships rather than relying solely on a single external security umbrella. He mentioned that Pakistan and Türkiye could offer strategic linkages, while enhanced relations with China and Russia could contribute to regional stability.

Regarding Saudi Arabia’s stance on the Abraham Accords, Khan pointed out that Riyadh remains committed to the establishment of a Palestinian state and seeks concrete commitments and timeframes for Palestinian statehood.

Addressing Pakistan-India relations, Khan said Pakistan has strengthened its diplomatic and defence positions but advised caution against India’s multi-pronged strategies. He stressed the need for vigilance against various forms of pressure.

Khan concluded by emphasizing the importance of promoting diplomatic engagement between Iran and the United States and developing practical arrangements to reduce tensions, facilitate regional trade, and restore stability.
