ISLAMABAD: A seminar focusing on the Indus Waters Treaty is set to take place in Islamabad tomorrow, aiming to underscore Pakistan’s water rights under the international agreement. The event will bring together water and legal experts, along with foreign delegates, to discuss critical aspects of the treaty, according to a press release from Radio Pakistan.
Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar and Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik outlined the seminar’s agenda. Attaullah Tarar emphasized that the international community supports Pakistan’s stance on the treaty, noting that it cannot be unilaterally revoked or amended. He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s water rights, echoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir’s assertion that water is a vital resource for Pakistan.
Musadik Malik highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to address the Indus Waters Treaty at global platforms, including the United Nations, and noted the Court of Arbitration’s support for Pakistan’s position. He stressed the seminar’s focus on the rights of lower riparian countries and the detailed examination of the treaty’s legal and technical aspects. He also mentioned the government’s allocation of a significant portion of the development budget to water-related projects, underscoring their commitment to accelerating these initiatives.
