Pakistan’s Role Crucial in Sustaining US-Iran Peace Process, Says Former Ambassador

Islamabad: Pakistan’s sustained diplomatic engagement is vital to preserving the fragile peace process between the United States and Iran, according to Sardar Masood Khan, a former ambassador of Pakistan to the United States, China, and the United Nations, as well as a former President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. In a recent television interview, Khan emphasized the importance of Pakistan’s mediation efforts in achieving a historic breakthrough through the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding and resolving implementation challenges at Lake Lucerne.

According to the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khan highlighted that the current governance of the ceasefire is the most critical phase, with unresolved issues such as security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz needing immediate attention. He stressed the importance of confidence-building mechanisms, including direct communication channels between the US and Iran, to prevent misunderstandings and maintain stability.

Khan noted that the Memorandum of Understanding could transform the Middle East if implemented faithfully, potentially paving the way for economic reconstruction, regional cooperation, and a new security architecture. He commended the mediatory roles of Pakistan and Qatar in bridging differences between Tehran and Washington and emphasized the need for continued diplomatic efforts to encourage restraint and constructive dialogue.

While acknowledging significant diplomatic progress, Khan cautioned that regional stability faces challenges from unresolved conflicts and competing strategic interests. He called for a commitment from all stakeholders to honor the agreed framework and avoid actions that could undermine the diplomatic process.

In conclusion, Khan asserted that Pakistan has demonstrated the potential for responsible middle powers to contribute to international peace by facilitating dialogue and consensus-building. He urged Islamabad to strengthen its role as a trusted regional mediator, supporting a cooperative security and economic framework for lasting stability and prosperity in the Middle East.
