ISLAMABAD: The government is considering the implementation of a comprehensive development package aimed at overhauling the construction sector and elevating national standards. This initiative was discussed in a meeting led by Ahad Cheema, the Minister for Economic Affairs and Establishment Division.

According to Radio Pakistan, the proposed package includes the establishment of a Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and the evaluation of a dedicated Construction Development Bank (CDB). Additionally, the package outlines plans for the rationalization of import and export policies and targeted tax reforms within the construction sector.

Ahad Cheema highlighted that the CIDB is intended to serve a dual function—promoting the overall development of the construction sector while also acting as a regulatory body to oversee industry standards, contractors, and consultants. Comprising representatives from both public and private sectors, the board aims to provide a cohesive platform to enhance national standards.

The Minister emphasized the government’s primary goal of ensuring that every public infrastructure project is cost-effective and highly durable. He asserted that public funds are a national trust that must be protected from wastage due to substandard execution or flawed technical designs. The establishment of an independent board with both development and regulatory responsibilities is expected to enforce accountability, streamline dispute resolution, and elevate national construction standards to international levels.
