Islamabad, The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a reminder to Members of Parliament and Provincial Assemblies of Sindh and Baluchistan to submit their yearly Statements of Assets and Liabilities by December 31, 2023. This submission is a mandatory requirement under the Elections Act, 2017, aiming to maintain transparency and accountability among elected officials.
According to Election Commission of Pakistan, the requirement under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017, mandates every Member of the Assembly and Senate to submit a copy of their statement of assets and liabilities, including those of their spouse and dependent children, as of the preceding thirtieth day of June. The ECP is scheduled to publish the names of Members who fail to submit the requisite statement by the specified deadline on January 1 each year through a press release. If a Member does not submit their statement by January 15, their membership will be suspended until they comply.
The ECP also highlighted that if a Member’s submitted statement of assets and liabilities is found to be materially false, they could face legal proceedings for committing a corrupt practice. The prescribed Form-B, along with instructions and guidelines, is available free of cost from various locations, including the Election Commission Secretariat in Islamabad, offices of Provincial Election Commissioners, Senate Secretariat, National Assembly Secretariat, and Secretariats of concerned Provincial Assemblies. Additionally, Form-B can be downloaded from the ECP’s website.
This requirement underscores the ECP’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in Pakistan’s electoral and governance processes.
