Chairman Senate Calls for Strategic Planning to Strengthen Pakistan’s Higher Education Sector


Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has emphasized the need for effective leadership, sound governance, and strategic planning to bolster Pakistan’s higher education sector. Speaking as the chief guest at a gathering on “Strategic Planning and Leadership Excellence,” organized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) through the National Academy of Higher Education, Gilani stressed the transformation of universities into centers of excellence, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.



According to Senate of Pakistan, Gilani acknowledged the evolving responsibilities of higher education institutions, which now extend beyond imparting knowledge. He highlighted the importance of equipping young people with critical thinking, creativity, ethical values, and leadership skills to navigate a rapidly changing world. The Chairman Senate commended the HEC, particularly the National Academy of Higher Education, for bringing together Vice Chancellors and Pro Vice Chancellors from various regions, including Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Rawalpindi region.



Gilani underscored that strategic planning is crucial for institutional growth and excellence, requiring a clear vision, transparent governance, and responsible resource management. He praised the inclusion of women universities in the program, noting the vital role of women’s education in national development and acknowledging the consistent excellence demonstrated by women educators and leaders across Pakistan.



In his address, the Chairman Senate linked Pakistan’s progress to the strength of its universities and called for their transformation into centers of research, innovation, and policy development. He emphasized the role of higher education institutions in promoting social harmony, democratic values, and national progress across all regions of Pakistan, including Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan.



Gilani commended the HEC for its investment in institutional leadership and strategic capacity building, which he noted as essential for university leaders to develop strategies that align with both international developments and national priorities. He urged academic leaders to foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation within their institutions, preparing students to become responsible citizens and future leaders.



Concluding his address, Gilani congratulated the participants and organizers, expressing hope that the discussions would meaningfully contribute to strengthening higher education across Pakistan. He reiterated his commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance education, institutional capacity, and national development, while praying for the nation’s peace, prosperity, and continued progress.
