Paris, A recent report released by UNESCO on behalf of UN-Water reveals a grim picture of global water insecurity, with 2.2 billion people lacking access to safely managed drinking water and 3.5 billion without access to safely managed sanitation. Despite the UN’s goal to ensure universal access by 2030, the report paints a bleak outlook, warning of rising inequalities and potential threats to social stability due to increasing water scarcity exacerbated by climate change.
According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the impact of water scarcity is multifaceted, affecting everything from health and food security to gender equality and migration. The burden of water collection disproportionately falls on girls and women, hindering their education and economic participation. Furthermore, water scarcity is driving migration, which can exacerbate tensions in areas already struggling with limited water resources.
The report highlights the potential for water scarcity to fuel conflicts, particularly in regions like the Sahel, where disputes over water and land access are already causing tensions. It underscores the urgent need for transboundary agreements to manage shared water resources equitably, noting that only a fraction of the world’s population living in transboundary basins is covered by such agreements.
Despite these challenges, the report also showcases successful examples of cooperation, such as the Framework Agreement on the Sava River Basin and the revitalization of the Lake Chad Basin Commission. These initiatives have not only facilitated sustainable water management but also contributed to regional stability by fostering dialogue and cooperation.
UNESCO’s report calls for increased international cooperation and legal frameworks to address the global water crisis and prevent it from exacerbating existing conflicts or sparking new ones. By prioritizing equitable water management and harnessing the power of collaboration, states can work towards a more peaceful and water-secure world.
