Islamabad, U.S. authorities have successfully disrupted a plot to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh leader and an American and Canadian citizen, on U.S. soil. Pannun serves as the general counsel for Sikhs for Justice, a U.S.-based group advocating for an independent Sikh state, Khalistan.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Financial Times reported that the U.S. government issued a warning to India over concerns about its alleged involvement in the assassination plot. This matter was raised by U.S. President Joe Biden during a meeting with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G-20 summit in New Delhi in September. The National Security Council confirmed the Financial Times report and stated that the U.S. had addressed this issue with India at the highest levels.
This plot’s revelation follows the murder of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver in June. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September acknowledged credible allegations linking New Delhi to Nijjar’s fatal shooting.
