Islamabad: Pakistan’s President has called for a comprehensive and evolving approach to counter drug abuse and illicit trafficking, acknowledging the changing dynamics of the global drug threat. The statement was released on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, highlighting the need for innovative responses in the face of new challenges.

According to Press Information Department, the President emphasized that while law enforcement remains crucial in combating drug production and distribution, it is insufficient on its own. The emergence of synthetic and illicit drugs, alongside traditional narcotics, poses a significant threat, exacerbated by the use of advanced technologies and digital platforms by criminal networks to expand their operations and evade detection.

The President noted with concern the exploitation of social media and mobile applications to glamorize drug use, particularly targeting young people. The portrayal of drug use as fashionable or harmless, he stated, is a misleading narrative that can have detrimental impacts on individuals and society.

The President highlighted the widespread effects of drug abuse, from the loss of educational opportunities to the strain on families and communities. He stressed the importance of prevention, education, and rehabilitation in addressing these issues, advocating for support systems to aid those affected by addiction in their recovery.

This year’s theme, “Persisting Issues, New Challenges and Innovative Responses to Build a Drug-Free Generation,” was emphasized as a call for collective vigilance and adaptation. The President urged a national effort involving parliament, educators, religious leaders, media, and families to foster an environment conducive to healthy choices and opportunities for youth.

Acknowledging the efforts of those on the front lines of this battle, including law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and educators, the President lauded their contributions to safeguarding communities and enhancing the national response to drug-related challenges.

He concluded by underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in preventing drug abuse and supporting recovery to ensure a healthier, safer, and more hopeful future for Pakistan.
