Pakistan’s Digital Strategy to Include Satellite Broadband Connectivity

Islamabad: The Senate was informed on Friday that broadband connectivity through satellite is an integral part of Pakistan’s digital strategy. This development came as Minister for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, highlighted the advancements in satellite communications regulations and licensing frameworks.

According to Radio Pakistan, Minister Khawaja, in a written response to the Senate, stated that the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board has prepared a draft of Satellite Communications Regulations. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has developed a framework for licensing Fixed Satellite Services. The framework is anticipated to be presented to the Federal Cabinet shortly. The aim of the licensing framework is to facilitate satellite broadband, bandwidth provision, and corporate data services, thereby fostering a satellite-enabled connectivity ecosystem.

Minister Khawaja further noted that the proposed regulatory framework is designed to align with international practices and foster an environment conducive to investment. Several prominent global satellite operators, including SpaceX, OneWeb, Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology, and Sateliot, have expressed interest in the Pakistani market.

In a separate address, Minister of State for Climate Change Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal informed the Senate that 800 million rupees have been allocated for the development of the National Botanical Garden under the up-scaling Green Pakistan program.
