Islamabad, Pakistan has emphasized the need for concrete action on the Political Declaration adopted at last September’s Sustainable Development Goals Summit, where world leaders pledged to eliminate poverty and hunger and fight inequalities.
According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Pakistan’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram, spoke during a debate at the Security Council on promoting sustainable peace through common development. Akram urged that the pledges made in the Political Declaration should be endorsed by the Security Council to make them binding obligations.
In his address, Ambassador Akram supported the efforts of the U.N. Peacebuilding Commission in resolving conflict situations by promoting development. He highlighted the essential role of development in achieving peace, particularly in areas affected by foreign occupation and the denial of self-determination rights, citing the situations in Palestine and Occupied Jammu and Kashmir as examples.
Akram’s statements reflect Pakistan’s stance on the importance of international cooperation and commitment to the goals set forth in the Political Declaration. The emphasis on transforming these pledges into binding obligations indicates a call for accountability and action from global leaders to address pressing global challenges, including poverty, hunger, and inequality.
