Pakistan to Host Key IMO Workshop Focused on Sustainable Ship Recycling

ISLAMABAD, The Ministry of Maritime Affairs Pakistan is preparing to host the “IMO Workshop under Integrated Technical Cooperation Program for Implementation of the Hong Kong Convention, Pakistan 2023,” from 13th to 15th November in Karachi. This workshop marks a significant step towards Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable ship recycling and enhancing its maritime industry.

According to Press Information Department (PID), the workshop will focus on Pakistan’s goal to become a signatory of the Hong Kong Convention, which represents a new chapter in the country’s maritime sector. A key aspect of the discussions will be the requirement for ships intended for recycling to maintain detailed inventories of hazardous materials, emphasizing the importance of safe and environmentally responsible ship recycling practices in Pakistan.

Chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, V. Admiral (R) Iftikhar Ahmad Rao, the event will feature prominent guests and speakers, including H.E. Mr. Per Albert Ilsaas, the Ambassador of Norway to Pakistan, Country Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Mr. Geir Thomas Tonstol, and Mr. Jun Sun from the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The seminar presents a vital opportunity for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions, contribute to shaping industry standards, and collaborate towards a more sustainable maritime future for Pakistan.
