ISLAMABAD: Pakistan marked World Population Day by renewing its commitment to responsible population planning, underscoring its importance for sustainable development and national prosperity. The observance comes as the nation grapples with significant challenges stemming from its high population growth rate.
According to Press Information Department, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need for prudent population management as a foundation for a welfare-oriented society. He highlighted that a population aligned with available resources ensures equitable access to services and contributes to the well-being of citizens. This year’s theme, “Realizing the Hopes and Aspirations of Young People, Today and for the Future,” focuses on the critical role of youth in shaping a prosperous future.
With more than 65% of Pakistan’s population under the age of 30, the Prime Minister described this demographic as a national asset that could drive economic and social progress. However, he noted that the country’s annual population growth rate of 2.55% poses significant challenges, including in areas such as economic planning, employment, education, healthcare, housing, and environmental sustainability.
To address these challenges, the Federal Government has established the National Population Council, tasked with ensuring policy coordination between federal and provincial levels and providing strategic guidance for the National Population Programme. The Council will prioritize integrating population issues into the national agenda and promoting policies that support long-term prosperity.
The government is also implementing initiatives like the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme to develop capable and empowered citizens. Sharif called on all sectors, including government, civil society, and the private sector, to collaborate in addressing population-related challenges, advocating for informed decision-making, responsible parenthood, and gender equality.
The Prime Minister concluded by expressing confidence that through collective efforts, Pakistan can transform its demographic potential into enduring national strength, securing a stable and prosperous future for all generations.
