Islamabad, Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, chaired an inter-ministerial committee meeting focused on revising the Ministry of Interior’s Remission Policy of 2002. The meeting brought together representatives from various governmental departments to deliberate on improvements to the policy, which governs the reduction of sentences for incarcerated individuals.
According to Press Information Department, the committee meeting included participants from the Ministries of Law and Justice, Interior, Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, as well as officials from the Home Departments of Punjab, Sindh, and KPK. The discussions emphasized the need for a more liberal and reformative approach to the remission policy, encouraging a system that supports repentance and reform among prisoners.
During the meeting, the necessity of implementing broader prison reforms at the provincial level was also discussed. It was noted that while the Supreme Court has supported the existing classification system within the policy, it allows room for the executive to amend the policy to be more benevolent and beneficial. The meeting concluded with a unanimous agreement on the importance of introducing reforms that ensure a fair, just, and equitable system of remission for prisoners.
