Ministry of Human Rights Conducts Workshop for Prison Authorities on Human Rights Framework


SAHIWAL: The Ministry of Human Rights, in partnership with UNDP Pakistan, organized a two-day workshop aimed at enhancing the understanding of human rights frameworks among prison authorities. Held at the Punjab Prisons Staff Training College in Sahiwal on September 25-26, 2026, the event focused on improving the management of prisons with an emphasis on the rights of prisoners, women, and other vulnerable groups.



According to Ministry of Human Rights, the workshop began with remarks from Mr. Saqib Nazir Chaudhry, Deputy Commandant of the Punjab Prisons Staff Training College, who underscored efforts to improve human rights governance within the prison system. Comprehensive presentations from the ministry highlighted the importance of equipping prison officials with practical knowledge of both national and international human rights frameworks. Participants engaged in sessions covering fundamental human rights concepts, international instruments, and Pakistan’s commitments, with additional focus on gender-responsive management.



The second day of the workshop addressed the Pakistan Prisons Rules 1978, focusing on the rights of prisoners and the importance of rehabilitation and vocational training, especially for women. Dr. Qadeer Alam from the Prisons Department detailed the evolution of standards and rights for prisoners and staff. Mr. Zulfiqar Ali, Director of the Ministry of Human Rights, emphasized the need for continued collaboration among stakeholders to uphold Pakistan’s human rights commitments in the prison system. The session concluded with certificate distribution and a pledge to enhance cooperation for rights-based prison management.
