Majority of Pakistani Men Support Women Riding Bikes, Survey Finds

Islamabad: More than half of Pakistani men support women in their households riding bikes or scooties, a recent survey conducted by Gallup & Gilani Pakistan has revealed. The study, which gathered responses from a representative sample of adult Pakistani men, found that 51% expressed support for the practice, while 33% opposed it.

According to Gallup & Gilani Pakistan, the survey highlighted that support is notably higher among men with an FA degree or higher (65%) and those residing in urban areas (60%). The survey, conducted between March 18 and March 31, 2026, involved telephonic interviews with 680 men across various provinces. The findings indicate that empowerment is a key factor driving support, cited by 58% of respondents. Meanwhile, concerns about honor and family, along with religious and cultural beliefs, are the primary reasons for opposition, reported by 51% and 46% of respondents, respectively.

The survey further explored motivations behind these attitudes. Among supporters, time-saving (30%) and reducing transportation responsibilities (24%) were also mentioned as reasons for their stance. On the other hand, those opposing cited safety concerns (19%) and fear of public criticism (17%) as additional factors.

The study, released by the Gilani Research Foundation, found that while support for women riding bikes is prevalent, significant cultural and safety concerns continue to influence public opinion. The survey’s margin of error is estimated to be ± 2-3 percent at a 95% confidence level.
