Leh, In a show of solidarity, leaders from the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have declared their participation in the ongoing hunger strike led by Ladakhi environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, marking its 18th day in Leh, Ladakh. This movement seeks to address crucial demands for the region’s inhabitants under the challenging conditions of sub-zero temperatures.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Wangchuk’s protest has garnered significant attention and support, with hundreds rallying to his cause on a daily basis. The KDA, representing Kargil’s interests, will join the hunger strike from March 24 to 27, amplifying the call for the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and the grant of statehood to the region.
Sajjad Hussain, a prominent figure within the KDA, expressed frustration over unfulfilled negotiations with the Indian government led by the BJP. Despite previous discussions, the demands of the Ladakhi people have not been met, particularly concerning the Sixth Schedule inclusion and statehood, both of which hold profound significance for the residents of Ladakh.
The ongoing agitation led by the LAB (Leh Apex Body) and KDA also emphasizes the need for a job reservation policy exclusive to Ladakh’s locals and a separate parliamentary seat for each of the Leh and Kargil districts. These measures are seen as vital for preserving the region’s cultural and demographic integrity against external influences.
