Karachi, Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, announced significant healthcare initiatives during the inauguration of the new Pediatric and Neonatology Department at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The Mayor emphasized the city administration’s commitment to improving healthcare facilities and outlined plans for further development in the health sector.
According to Media KMC, Mayor Wahab, during the opening ceremony, declared the city’s plans to establish the Karachi Institute of Child and Health within Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. He also mentioned the formation of a management board for the hospital, comprising prominent city personalities. The Mayor underscored the city’s struggle with problems due to past wrongdoings and called for positive political action. He expressed optimism about the coming year and projected significant improvements at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital within four years.
Mayor Wahab was joined by Deputy Mayor Karachi Salman Abdullah Murad, other city officials, and healthcare professionals at the ceremony. He lauded the efforts of Professor Dr. Sultan Mustafa in revamping the pediatric department and proposed naming the new ward after Dr. Sultan’s mother. The Mayor praised the contributions of community heroes and highlighted the importance of their services.
The newly constructed 192-bed Children’s Ward is part of the hospital’s expansion, which also includes the renovation of the Gynecology Ward and Trauma Center. Mayor Wahab stressed the potential for progress in the city’s medical institutions, emphasizing the need for media coverage to highlight these positive developments.
Additionally, Mayor Wahab addressed the challenges faced by the healthcare system, criticizing the practice of taking credit for others’ work and the politicization of healthcare. He spoke about the annual expenditure of Karachi Medical and Dental College and the ambition to elevate Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases to the standards of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. He urged public representatives to collaborate in deciding the best course of action for the city and its citizens.
In his speech, Mayor Wahab paid tribute to the doctors and nurses of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for their dedication and announced plans to improve the hospital’s emergency and gynecological wards. He also pledged to focus on enhancing the hospital’s sewage and sanitation system.
The Mayor concluded by highlighting the efforts of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation to provide better medical facilities to the citizens. He emphasized the ongoing upgrades at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, which is the third-largest hospital in Karachi, to ensure access to quality healthcare for residents, especially in the central district of Karachi.
