Islamabad: Meteorologists have forecast a significant change in weather patterns after an extended dry spell, as a frontal weather system is expected to bring rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall to the upper regions of Pakistan from February 19 to 21, 2025. The weather system is anticipated to affect multiple provinces, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab, with varying levels of intensity.
According to a statement by National Weather Forecasting Centre – Islamabad, this weather system will impact several areas with rain, wind, thunderstorms, and snowfall over the coming days. In Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir, regions such as Diamir, Astore, and Neelum Valley are likely to experience heavy snowfall and rain from February 19 to 21, with brief intervals of clear weather.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, areas including Chitral, Swat, and Mansehra are predicted to see similar weather conditions, with potential snowfall over the hills on February 19 and 20. Meanwhile, Punjab, including Islamabad, is expected to witness rain, wind, and thunderstorms from February 19 to 21, with snowfall specifically in Murree and Galliyat.
Balochistan will also experience rain, wind, and thunderstorms with possible snowfall over the hills in regions such as Quetta and Ziarat on February 18 and 19. In contrast, Sindh is forecasted to remain predominantly dry, although gusty winds may occur along the coastal areas.
The National Weather Forecasting Centre has warned of potential road closures and slippery conditions due to heavy snowfall in various hilly regions, including Swat and Murree. There is also a risk of hailstorms in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Kashmir, along with possible landslides and avalanches in the affected areas.
Tourists are advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during this period. However, the rain is expected to benefit standing crops, particularly in the Barani areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
