New Delhi: Driven by mounting debts and the government’s failure to fulfill demands for a Minimum Support Price (MSP), Indian farmers have intensified their protests. Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hunger strike has highlighted the critical issues facing Indian agriculture.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, farmers, particularly in Punjab and Haryana, are staging protests that have led to the disruption of railways and roads. The Modi government’s response to their demands has been characterized by indifference, as rising input costs, inadequate storage facilities, and unfair pricing exacerbate the crisis, pushing many farmers to the brink of starvation.
Since 2020, more than 9,000 farmers have committed suicide, with the government’s inaction in addressing mounting debts further fueling the outrage. Instead of responding to their demands, the Indian government has labeled farmers as agitators and responded with barricades, tear gas, and internet shutdowns as they march to Delhi.
Farmers are seeking fair prices, support, and dignity, but the government’s response threatens to undermine the backbone of the agricultural sector.
