World Bank and Pakistan Strengthen Ties in Energy Sector Reforms


Islamabad, Federal Ministers for Petroleum and Power, Dr. Musadik Malik and Awais Leghari, respectively, engaged in strategic discussions with Mr. Martin Raiser, the World Bank’s South Asia Regional Vice President. The talks focused on advancing Pakistan’s energy sector reforms and enhancing technical assistance provided by the World Bank.



According to Press Information Department, during the meeting, Dr. Musadik Malik acknowledged the World Bank’s ongoing support, which has significantly contributed to the restructuring of governance models within Pakistan’s energy sector. He highlighted the differentiated tariff systems for different income groups and discussed potential areas for collaborative efforts in the gas sector to benefit the entire value chain.



The World Bank’s experience in governance frameworks was noted as particularly valuable for Pakistan’s ongoing reforms. Minister Awais Leghari emphasized the importance of cooperation in the privatization of Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and the establishment of a joint working group to improve the transmission and distribution network.



He also mentioned the restructuring initiatives already in place, including changes to the Boards of Directors for DISCOs. Mr. Raiser reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s transition to a more efficient and low-cost energy mix, highlighting energy as a central pillar of the World Bank’s engagement with Pakistan.
