Geneva, The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) is set to conduct its next session from February 19 to March 1, focusing on the review of Cambodia, Burkina Faso, and Honduras regarding their adherence to the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance. This session marks a critical evaluation of these nations’ efforts to address and curb the issue of enforced disappearances, a matter of international human rights concern.
According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the session will commence with a public meeting that includes a tribute to victims of enforced disappearance, highlighted by the testimony of a victim from Colombia. Cambodia, Burkina Faso, and Honduras, as States parties to the Convention, are obligated to undergo regular scrutiny by the Committee. This panel consists of 10 independent international experts evaluating the implementation of the Convention and the adherence to the Committee’s previous recommendations.
The reviews will be conducted through public dialogues with the delegations from each state on specified dates, allowing for a comprehensive examination of the measures each country has taken towards fulfilling their obligations under the Convention. The Committee has prepared for these discussions by examining country reports and submissions from non-governmental organizations, setting the stage for a detailed inquiry into the states’ practices and challenges in preventing and responding to enforced disappearances.
The public reviews for Cambodia and Burkina Faso are scheduled to be held at the Palais Wilson in Geneva, while the review for Honduras will take place at the Palais des Nations. These meetings are accessible to the accredited press and will be broadcast live on UN Web TV, ensuring transparency and broad access to the proceedings. Further details about the session, including state reports and the complete meeting schedule, are available on the session’s webpage, offering stakeholders and the general public insight into the UN’s efforts to tackle enforced disappearances globally.
