New York, The United Nations General Assembly has adopted four resolutions proposed by Pakistan, focusing on disarmament to enhance regional and international peace and security. These resolutions emphasize the role of regional disarmament, conventional arms control, and confidence-building measures in promoting stability.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the resolutions were passed with overwhelming support from the members of the Assembly’s First Committee (Disarmament and International Security). Three of these resolutions address regional disarmament, conventional arms control at regional and sub-regional levels, and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in these contexts. The fourth resolution seeks to provide international security assurances to non-nuclear-weapon states.

The resolutions titled “Regional Disarmament” and “Confidence Building Measures” in the regional and sub-regional context received unanimous approval from the Assembly, adopted without a vote. However, the resolution on “Conventional arms control at regional and sub-regional levels” garnered 186 votes in favor, with India casting the sole dissenting vote.

Another resolution, titled “Conclusion of effective international arrangements to assure non-nuclear-weapon States against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons,” was also approved by a large majority, with 123 votes in favor, none against, and 62 abstentions.

Diplomats highlighted that all four resolutions underscore the importance of regional and global approaches to arms control, disarmament, and confidence building. They aim to address the risks associated with excessive conventional military buildups, particularly in South Asia, and encourage CBMs to alleviate regional tensions and support disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation efforts. The resolution on conventional arms control recognizes that maintaining a balance in defense capabilities among states contributes to peace and stability.

The adoption of these resolutions by the UN General Assembly demonstrates Pakistan’s active role in promoting disarmament and underscores the international community’s commitment to ensuring global peace and security.
