U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Highlights Strong Bilateral Ties in Karachi Visit


Karachi, In a significant move to bolster U.S.-Pakistan relations, Andrew Schofer, the Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States Mission in Pakistan, emphasized the United States’ commitment to supporting democracy, economic growth, and women’s economic empowerment during his visit to Karachi from February 13 to 16, 2024. This visit underscores the continued efforts by the United States to strengthen its partnership with Pakistan and work collaboratively on shared priorities aimed at promoting regional stability and inclusive economic growth.



According to Embassy of The United States of America, DCM Schofer articulated the United States’ dedication to deepening its partnership with Pakistan, focusing on shared objectives that further democracy and economic development. His visit to Karachi highlighted the multifaceted engagement between the two nations, involving diverse stakeholders to enhance bilateral relations significantly.



During his stay, Schofer detailed the United States’ support for the people of Sindh in the aftermath of the climate disaster and floods. He noted the provision of over $215 million since 2022 to assist in recovery efforts, with a particular focus on education, clean water, combating malnutrition, and improving healthcare services. This aid exemplifies the United States’ active role in supporting the resilience and recovery of the affected communities in Sindh.



A key highlight of Schofer’s visit was his trip to the USAID-supported Terry Tex International company in Karachi. This visit showcased how U.S. aid facilitates the empowerment of local businesses and women entrepreneurs, enabling them to explore new growth avenues and contribute to economic development.



Furthermore, Schofer’s engagement with the Lincoln Corner at the Pakistan American Cultural Center brought together young leaders for a vibrant exchange of ideas, demonstrating the United States’ interest in fostering dialogue and leadership among Pakistan’s youth.



The Deputy Chief of Mission also engaged with leaders from the private sector and civil society, spanning the finance, pharmaceuticals, and textiles industries. These meetings emphasized the critical role of inclusive, private sector-led growth in enhancing trade and investment ties between Pakistan and the United States.



Additionally, Schofer’s discussions with UNHCR officials and his interaction with the Parsi community in Karachi reflected the United States’ commitment to humanitarian support for Afghan refugees and vulnerable religious minorities in Pakistan. These engagements highlighted the importance of understanding and appreciating Karachi’s diverse religious and cultural landscape, contributing to greater harmony and mutual respect among its residents.
