Islamabad, 11 Oct 2023:Highlighting critical challenges and disturbing trends faced by girls worldwide, the United Nations Secretary-General expounded on the considerable gap between current conditions and the Sustainable Development Goals set for 2030 in his message on the International Day of the Girl Child. He underscored the drastic projections indicating that, without significant change, the eradication of child marriage could still be three centuries away and alarming numbers of young women and girls will be deprived of education and mired in extreme poverty by the deadline of the Sustainable Development Goals.
According to the message, not only are historical forms of discrimination against girls persisting, but they are intensifying in some instances. The situation of girls in Afghanistan was cited as a poignant example where basic rights and freedoms are stifled, and avenues for education or economic independence are blocked. In addition to persistent traditional biases, new forms of inequality are emerging, including a digital divide that excludes many girls from the online world and algorithms that perpetuate sexism by basing on the experiences of men and boys.
However, amidst the dire circumstances, girls globally are resisting – challenging sexism, dispelling stereotypes, and effectuating change in various arenas including sports, academics, and public spheres. The Secretary-General emphasized the imperativeness of standing in solidarity with them.
In light of these challenges, his proposal for an SDG Stimulus aimed at realigning efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals is reportedly gaining momentum. A focal point for this year’s International Day of the Girl Child is investing in girls’ leadership, which encompasses support towards realizing their aspirations and enhancing gender equality. The message affirmed that when women and girls lead, they possess the capability to alter attitudes, engender change, and promote policies and solutions that address their distinct needs.
The Secretary-General concluded by echoing that women and girls have the potential to navigate the world towards a more equitable future, and called for amplifying girls’ voices and a collective recommitment to forge a world in which every girl can lead and flourish.
