Sindh Government Moves to Regulate Wheat Market Amid Price Concerns

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has instructed provincial authorities to take measures to regulate the wheat market to protect consumers from artificial price hikes. The directive aims to address rising wheat prices and potential supply manipulation.

According to Chief Minister Sindh, during a meeting focused on wheat market stability, the Chief Minister reviewed the widening gap between the official support price and market rates, and the risks associated with speculative stockpiling of wheat. The meeting was attended by key provincial ministers and officials, who provided updates on the government’s wheat procurement efforts.

Officials reported that, despite a support price set at Rs3,500 per 40 kg, procurement targets are not being met due to price disparities. As of June 4, 2026, only 79,835.66 metric tonnes of wheat were procured against a target of 1 million metric tonnes. The Chief Minister highlighted that speculation-based hoarding jeopardizes food security and price stability in the province.

CM Murad Ali Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring wheat remains available and affordable for Sindh’s citizens. He reiterated the need for collaboration among growers, millers, traders, and federal authorities to prevent speculation and artificial shortages. Regular progress reports on regulatory measures have been requested from the Food Department and related agencies to ensure accountability and transparency.
