Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening relations with Ethiopia during a meeting with Ethiopian Ambassador H.E. Dr. Oumer Hussein Oba. The meeting, held at Gilani’s residence, focused on deepening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.
According to Press Information Department, Gilani emphasized the historical foundation of Pakistan-Ethiopia relations and highlighted the role of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in establishing strong diplomatic ties. He noted the significance of the forthcoming Bilateral Political Consultation Agreement in expanding cooperation on regional and international matters.
Gilani also stressed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and the establishment of the Pakistan-Ethiopia Friendship Group in the Senate of Pakistan. He invited Ethiopian parliamentary counterparts to engage with the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference to explore future collaboration opportunities. Additionally, he extended an invitation to the Speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament to visit Pakistan.
Discussing economic cooperation, Gilani underscored the need for stronger trade partnerships, particularly in sectors like agriculture, engineering, and information technology. He welcomed the opening of Ethiopia’s Embassy in Islamabad and the growth in people-to-people engagement through direct air connectivity.
The meeting also highlighted climate cooperation and cultural linkages, with Gilani proposing expanded scholarship opportunities and academic partnerships. Both sides expressed a shared resolve to strengthen cooperation across various domains for mutual benefit.
Ambassador Oba expressed gratitude for the hospitality and appreciated Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing engagement with Ethiopia and Africa.
