Kinshasa, The Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing a concerning rise in ethnic-based hate speech and incitement to violence, especially in the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, and the regions of Kasaï and Katanga, following the general elections last month.
According to Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the increase in hateful, dehumanizing, and inciteful rhetoric poses a significant threat to the stability and security not only within the DRC but also in the surrounding region. The Office acknowledged some efforts by authorities to counteract this behavior, but emphasized the need for stronger and more effective actions.
The High Commissioner called upon the authorities in the DRC to conduct thorough and transparent investigations into all reports of hate speech and incitement to violence. It is imperative that those responsible for these acts be held accountable to ensure the restoration and maintenance of peace and stability in the region.
This rise in ethnic tension and violence underscores the critical importance of addressing hate speech and promoting unity in the aftermath of political events like general elections, for the safety and security of the nation and its neighboring regions.
