Restoration Efforts in Karachi’s Historic Markets to Conclude by June 30, Says Mayor

Karachi: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has issued directives to expedite the restoration work in Karachi’s historic markets, aiming for completion by June 30. During a recent inspection of ongoing projects at Civil Line Market, Lea Market, and Machhi Miani Market, the mayor expressed satisfaction with the progress and emphasized the importance of the restoration efforts.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, the visit also included Karamullah Waqasi, Parliamentary Leader in the KMC City Council, along with engineers and other officials. Mayor Wahab highlighted that this initiative by the Pakistan Peoples Party’s local government marks the first time a focus has been placed on both infrastructure and the preservation of historical heritage. The restoration aims to return the old markets to their original condition while upgrading them with modern facilities.

Criticizing detractors, Mayor Wahab remarked on the challenges faced, stating that past negligence had left these municipal heritage sites in poor condition. He assured that the current development projects are becoming increasingly visible and will soon enhance the city’s historical and commercial appeal.

The mayor underscored the necessity of maintaining high-quality standards in the restoration work and urged officials to increase the pace to meet the deadline. He noted the potential economic and tourism benefits from completing the projects. Mayor Wahab also reaffirmed plans for further restoration of historic sites across Karachi, aiming to preserve the city’s cultural heritage for future generations.
