PTA Engages Religious Scholars in Initiative to Foster Responsible Internet Usage

Islamabad, 11 Oct 2023:In a proactive step to infuse safe and ethical practices in the usage of social media and the internet among Pakistani netizens, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) held a key meeting involving several influential religious scholars at its Islamabad headquarters. According to a press release from PTA, this collaborative effort aims to harness the influence of these scholars to navigate the challenges posed by digital platforms, ensuring that online engagement among the populace adheres to the nation’s cultural and religious ethos.

Islamic scholars representing varied schools of thought, including Dr. Qibla Ayaz, Chairman Council of Islamic Ideology (CII); Moulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, Chairman Ruet-e-Hilal Committee; and Maulana Tariq Jameel, were among the participants. They were joined by senior PTA officers in an event that commenced with a welcome address by the Director-General, Web Analysis Division (WAD) PTA, who elucidated upon PTA’s ongoing initiatives.

Chairman PTA, Maj General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman, spotlighted the crucial role that religious scholars play in steering the public towards ethical internet usage. He asserted that leveraging their platforms could significantly augment PTA’s initiatives and amplify their impact.

A segment of the meeting that facilitated open-floor discussions and recommendations presented an avenue for dynamic interaction and discourse among the attendees. A marked emphasis was placed on empowering youth with the knowledge of responsible internet usage, underlining the integral role of parents in imparting this education. Reference was made to the Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as beacons to guide these initiatives.

Addressing the perils posed by online threats, such as anti-state narratives, blasphemous content, and hate speech, the collective responsibility of various entities – the State, judiciary, PTA, PEMRA, FIA – and individuals, was underscored.

The scholars extended their appreciation towards PTA’s dedication and efforts to nurturing a safe and accountable digital environment. They assured the authority of their full cooperation and support, heralding this meeting as the inaugural of a series aimed at collaborative endeavours with esteemed Ulema to curb detrimental and unlawful online content.
