Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed confidence in the continued growth of the partnership between Pakistan and the United Nations, as he met with Mohamed Yahya, the outgoing United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan. The meeting underscored the UN’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development and humanitarian agenda.
According to Radio Pakistan, the farewell meeting took place in Islamabad, where Prime Minister Sharif extended his gratitude to Yahya for his contributions to enhancing the Pakistan-UN cooperation. He highlighted the UN Country Team’s ongoing support for Pakistan’s priorities, including climate resilience, sustainable development, and disaster response. The Prime Minister recalled the UN’s role in gathering international support for Pakistan, particularly during the 2022 floods.
Mohamed Yahya, who has been appointed as the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), was congratulated by Prime Minister Sharif on his new role. The Prime Minister described Yahya’s appointment as a recognition of his experience and commitment. Yahya expressed his gratitude for the cooperation provided by the Government of Pakistan during his tenure, and both parties expressed optimism for the continued strengthening of Pakistan-UN relations.
