Islamabad: On National Resilience Day, Prime Minister of Pakistan delivered a poignant message recognizing the country’s enduring spirit and capacity to recover from natural disasters, exacerbated by climate change. The day, marked annually on October 8, commemorates the devastating 2005 earthquake, a solemn reminder of the tragedies Pakistan has faced.
According to National Disaster Management Authority, the Prime Minister commended the advancements in disaster management led by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The establishment of the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), equipped with cutting-edge technology for early disaster warnings, was highlighted as a critical development in safeguarding lives and infrastructure.
The Prime Minister’s message underscored the impact of climate change on Pakistan, a country he noted as minimally contributing to but significantly affected by environmental changes. The frequent and unpredictable extreme weather events have posed considerable challenges to the national economy.
Emphasizing a comprehensive approach to disaster preparedness, the Prime Minister called for synergistic efforts among all stakeholders, including local, zonal, national, and global entities, both public and private. He stressed the importance of frequent coordination, development of contingency plans, and risk communication as essential for building national resilience.
Further, the message advocated for broad policy initiatives encompassing safer infrastructure development, enhanced disaster preparedness, poverty alleviation, and increased afforestation to fortify the nation against future crises.
The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude towards the international community, civil society, and private philanthropists for their support during the 2022 floods, highlighting the Pakistani people’s inherent philanthropy and resilience in times of crisis. His closing remarks called for divine guidance to help build a stronger, more resilient Pakistan.
