Islamabad: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Monday emphasized the importance of maintaining pollution-free ports as a key factor for economic growth and the safety of marine ecosystems. He highlighted the government’s dedication to sustainable maritime practices, which he said are essential for safe navigation and economic prosperity.
According to Press Information Department, the minister pointed to the Karachi Port Trust’s (KPT) latest clean-up initiative, which is conducted by its Marine Pollution Control Department. The operation successfully removed 16,430 kilograms of solid waste from critical harbour zones, including plastic debris and discarded fishing materials, which pose significant threats to marine ecosystems and port operations.
The targeted clean-up areas, such as the East Wharf, West Wharf, and Boat Basin Jetty, were identified as high-risk zones due to vessel traffic and urban runoff. The effort involved 54 boat deployments and 164 personnel working in shifts to ensure thorough coverage. The collected waste was transported to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board’s Garbage Transfer Station, adhering to environmental regulations to prevent secondary pollution.
Minister Chaudhry lauded the leadership of Admiral Shahid Ahmed and outlined future initiatives, including the introduction of modern waste-collection equipment and advanced monitoring systems. These measures, he stated, are in line with Pakistan’s sustainable maritime objectives and international commitments.
The minister reiterated the commitment to protecting marine life, ensuring navigational safety, and maintaining a cleaner harbour through collaboration with stakeholders and increased public awareness.
