PM Kakar Advocates Global Unity on Climate Change at COP28, Highlights Living Indus Initiative

Islamabad, 03 Dec 2023: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar emphasized the need for global unity in addressing the escalating challenge of climate change during his address at the ‘Living Indus Initiative’ event held at the Pakistan Pavilion alongside the COP28 conference in Dubai.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Prime Minister Kakar stressed that climate change is redefining humanity’s identity, underlining a shared commitment to tackle this global crisis. He showcased the Living Indus Initiative, a flagship project backed by an international climate finance commitment of nearly $78 billion, as a pivotal effort in this direction.

The Prime Minister highlighted the strategic importance of the Indus Basin, which encompasses the majority of Pakistan’s territory. He asserted that adapting the Indus Basin to climate change is essential for Pakistan’s broader climate adaptation strategies. The initiative aims to mitigate future flooding and drought impacts, benefiting millions of Pakistanis and potentially serving as a model for climate innovation globally.

Kakar called for the mobilization of both public and private sectors, as well as citizens and communities, to actively engage in combating climate change. This initiative represents a significant step in Pakistan’s efforts to address environmental challenges and adapt to the changing climate landscape.
