Islamabad: Minister of State for Health, Dr. Mukhtar Bharath, emphasized the urgent need for a stronger mental health framework and increased public awareness in Pakistan, addressing a mental health event organized by Health Services Academy and Bahria University.
According to Press Information Department, Dr. Bharath highlighted the significant gap in Pakistan’s healthcare system, particularly in prevention and health promotion, driven by a lack of public awareness. He noted that an estimated 35 to 40 million people in Pakistan are affected by various health conditions, including diabetes and hepatitis, which place psychological and emotional stress on families, leading to widespread mental health challenges.
Dr. Bharath pointed to a rise in suicide incidents in regions such as Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and areas of Punjab, attributing it to domestic violence, social pressures, and socio-economic factors. He expressed concern over the fragmented mental health sector, emphasizing the need for an integrated strategy involving psychiatrists, psychologists, allied health professionals, and regulatory bodies to address these challenges effectively.
The Minister underscored the government’s commitment to prioritizing mental health, enhancing preventive systems, and increasing public awareness. A Technical Advisory Group meeting was recently held to discuss establishing a resilient mental health system in the context of climate change, attended by various stakeholders and experts.
Dr. Bharath announced plans for an international event in Islamabad on World Mental Health Day 2026, where the National Mental Health Policy and climate change-related initiatives will be unveiled. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to initiatives aimed at disease prevention and fostering a healthy society.
Dr. Shahzad Ali Khan, Vice Chancellor of Health Services Academy, also highlighted the institution’s role in advancing public mental health through collaborations with the University of Liverpool and University of Manchester, emphasizing research, capacity building, and knowledge exchange. The Academy is working to develop trained human resources and strengthen the healthcare system through collaborations with national organizations and initiatives focused on emotional well-being.
