Pakistan to Hold General Elections on February 8, Affirms Caretaker Prime Minister


Islamabad, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has confirmed that Pakistan will hold its general elections on February 8th, emphasizing the constitutional commitment to this date. In an exclusive interview with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Prime Minister underscored the significance of this democratic exercise, which will determine the government for the next five years and is expected to lead to economic stability.



According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Prime Minister Kakar reiterated the importance of the upcoming elections for the people of Pakistan to exercise their voting rights. He highlighted the role of these elections in establishing a stable government, which he believes is crucial for the country’s economic stability.



Discussing the economic situation, Prime Minister Kakar mentioned the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Board’s approval of Pakistan’s second tranche, reflecting progress in the country’s economic revival. He emphasized the caretaker government’s focus on growth and improving economic indicators. Kakar also revealed plans to publish a white paper detailing the caretaker government’s performance over the past four to five months.



In his efforts to revamp Pakistan’s economy, Kakar noted significant changes introduced by his administration, including a revamped taxation system, an aggressive privatization drive, and federal expenditure cuts. He also mentioned engaging with provincial governments to rationalize their spending.



On the topic of regional security, the Caretaker Prime Minister stressed the need for a collaborative approach to counter terrorism and enhance the country’s counter-terrorism capacity. He asserted Pakistan’s role as a mid-sized power with potential that needs recognition.



Regarding foreign relations, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar affirmed Pakistan’s strong strategic ties with China, stating that regional developments or global changes would not affect this relationship.
