Pakistan Stands Against New Permanent Members in UN Security Council, Advocates for Equitable Reforms

Islamabad, Pakistan has formally expressed its opposition to the addition of new permanent members to the United Nations Security Council. This stance was articulated during the Inter-Governmental Negotiations held at the UN in New York, where Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Munir Akram, voiced the country’s perspective on the ongoing discussions about Security Council reform.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Akram emphasized the importance of principles such as inclusivity, equity, and consensus within the reform process. He reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group’s proposal, which advocates for the expansion of the Security Council through the addition of non-permanent members only, opposing the creation of new permanent seats.

In a related dialogue on the future of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Pakistan urged the body to broaden its focus to include economic, social, and cultural rights, highlighting a perceived imbalance in the Council’s attention towards human rights situations in developing countries. Ambassador Akram called for the elimination of double standards in addressing human rights issues at the UN, noting that significant concerns, such as the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, were being overlooked in favor of less pressing matters.

Pakistan’s interventions at these high-level UN discussions reflect its longstanding positions on both Security Council reform and global human rights governance. By advocating for a more equitable approach to international diplomacy and governance, Pakistan aims to ensure that the structures of global power and advocacy better represent the diversity and needs of the world’s nations.

As debates on these critical issues continue, Pakistan’s contributions underscore the complex dynamics of international relations and the need for reform processes that recognize and address the interests and concerns of all member states, especially those from the developing world.
