Pakistan rejects L-69 Group’s UNSC expansion proposal

Islamabad, Pakistan has officially voiced its opposition to the Reform Model proposed by the L-69 Group for the expansion of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in both its permanent and non-permanent membership categories. This stance was articulated by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, who highlighted concerns that an increase in permanent members would exacerbate the council’s operational paralysis and lead to greater inequity in representation.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Akram stressed that any country aspiring for a more frequent role in the UNSC should pursue it through the democratic mechanism of periodic elections by the General Assembly, rather than through expansion of permanent membership. This approach, he argued, would ensure a more equitable and effective functioning of the council, reflecting a broad consensus among UN member states on the need for reform that enhances the council’s responsiveness and democratic legitimacy.

Pakistan’s position underscores the complexities surrounding the debate on UNSC reform, a topic of global importance that has seen various proposals and counterproposals by member states seeking to balance representation, efficiency, and geopolitical interests within the council’s framework.
