Islamabad: Pakistan has reiterated its backing for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in its ongoing efforts to foster peace, security, and stability within Afghanistan. This support was articulated by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, during a United Nations Security Council session dedicated to the adoption of a resolution renewing UNAMA’s mandate.
According to Radio Pakistan, Ambassador Ahmad emphasized that Pakistan has persistently highlighted the growing threat of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan as one of the most pressing challenges. This threat, he noted, has direct implications for Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan. The ambassador expressed deep concern over reports that certain factions within the Taliban are collaborating with terrorist groups and granting them safe havens on Afghan territory.
Ambassador Ahmad further stated that UNAMA should ensure its reports remain fair and balanced, taking into consideration the legitimate security concerns of Afghanistan’s immediate neighbors. These countries, he remarked, are confronting serious threats originating from within Afghan borders.
