LAHORE: The Punjab government has initiated a significant phase in its ongoing anti-corruption campaign, resulting in the suspension or dismissal of 54 officers and officials, alongside several arrests and registered cases. This action follows directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who has instructed departments to address alleged corrupt practices among their ranks.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the Food Department is a primary focus, with 48 officers and officials facing disciplinary actions. In Bahawalpur, six food grain inspectors, including Sajid Mahmood Khan and Mohammad Saleem, were dismissed. Additional dismissals occurred in Gujranwala, including Assistant Food Controller Abu Bakr Raza. Other regions such as Sargodha, Multan, and Bahawalpur have also seen removals from service.

The government has initiated disciplinary proceedings against 14 food controllers on corruption allegations, with officials from Bahawalnagar, Okara, and Dera Ghazi Khan among those affected. Further actions are underway in Sahiwal, Gujrat, and Chakwal, targeting various officials.

Simultaneously, the Anti-Corruption Establishment has intensified its efforts, arresting several officials for alleged bribery. Notable arrests include Union Council Secretary Riaz Ahmed in Vehari and computer operator Zain-ul-Islam in Faisalabad. In Mandi Bahauddin, a junior clerk was apprehended while allegedly accepting a bribe.

The campaign, as stated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims to reach its logical conclusion, emphasizing the government’s commitment to rooting out corruption.
