Islamabad: Pakistan marked the International Day of Parliamentarism by reiterating its dedication to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring constitutional supremacy. Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the significance of parliamentary governance, transparency, accountability, and public involvement in decision-making processes.
According to Press Information Department, the Constitution of Pakistan enshrines a democratic system grounded in representative governance, with sovereignty ultimately residing with the people. Elected representatives exercise this authority to serve the nation’s welfare and prosperity. The Parliament is highlighted as the main constitutional forum for articulating public aspirations and concerns, enacting legislation, and deliberating national issues to ensure efficient use of public resources.
The statement noted Pakistan’s progress in promoting inclusivity and effective representation within its parliamentary democracy. The Parliament, it stated, provides a platform for women, minorities, and smaller provinces, with constitutional safeguards ensuring their participation and protection of their rights. Reserved seats for women and non-Muslim citizens in the National Assembly and Senate exemplify this commitment.
The Senate’s role in providing equal representation to federating units was also emphasized, contributing to national cohesion. Pakistan’s Parliament has adopted measures to enhance transparency and public engagement, ensuring public access to legislative processes and official documents.
The press release further highlighted Pakistan’s active role in international parliamentary diplomacy through its engagement with global forums and commitment to promoting peace, sustainable development, and international cooperation. Prime Minister Sharif urged a renewed commitment to the Constitution, parliamentary democracy, and public welfare on this day dedicated to parliamentarism.
