Islamabad: Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, has reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to democratic governance, parliamentary supremacy, inclusiveness, and public representation in a statement marking the International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on June 30.
According to Senate of Pakistan, Chairman Gilani emphasized that the day commemorates the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in 1889 and highlights the critical role that parliaments play in fostering democracy, accountability, transparency, peace, and sustainable development across the globe.
Mr. Gilani noted the indispensable nature of robust parliamentary institutions in tackling contemporary challenges, safeguarding citizens’ rights, and ensuring effective governance while bolstering public trust in democratic processes. He emphasized that parliaments serve as the voice of the people and are vital platforms for dialogue, consensus-building, and national advancement.
The Chairman Senate outlined the Senate of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to promote democratic values, legislative excellence, inter-parliamentary cooperation, and meaningful public engagement. He highlighted the growing significance of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering international understanding, regional peace, and cooperation among nations.
Chairman Gilani also stressed the importance of increasing the participation of women, youth, and marginalized communities within democratic institutions, asserting that inclusive representation is essential to maintaining a vibrant and resilient democracy.
On this occasion, he paid tribute to parliamentarians worldwide who are dedicated to peace, justice, human dignity, and sustainable development. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to strengthening its democratic institutions and advancing the principles enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan.
