Pakistan Marks 28th Anniversary of Nuclear Tests with Renewed Commitment to Defense and Sovereignty


Islamabad: Pakistan commemorated the 28th anniversary of its successful nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, with a message from President Asif Ali Zardari emphasizing the nation’s commitment to defense and sovereignty. The day, known as Youm-e-Takbeer, is celebrated as a significant milestone in Pakistan’s history, marking its emergence as a nuclear power.



According to Press Information Department, President Zardari’s message highlighted the historical context of Pakistan’s nuclear program, initiated in response to India’s nuclear tests and regional security dynamics. The President paid tribute to the scientists, engineers, and military personnel whose efforts enabled Pakistan to withstand international pressures and achieve strategic parity. The nuclear tests, conducted in the Chagai mountains, cemented Pakistan’s place as the world’s seventh nuclear power and reinforced its defense capabilities.



The President also addressed current security challenges, noting the evolution of warfare to include domains such as cyber and artificial intelligence. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance as a peace-loving nation with no aggressive intentions, while underscoring the right to self-defense under international law. Recent military operations, such as Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, were cited as examples of Pakistan’s defensive capabilities and national unity.
