Pakistan Launches Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign Aiming to Plant 20 Million Saplings

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has initiated the Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign 2026, underscoring its commitment to environmental conservation and climate resilience. The campaign aims to plant 20 million saplings nationwide, reflecting the country’s strategic emphasis on forest conservation and sustainable landscape management as outlined by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

According to Press Information Department, the initiative is part of a broader national strategy to address environmental challenges and fulfill international obligations, including the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. The campaign is a collaborative effort involving federal and provincial governments, as well as the administrations of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. These stakeholders are focused on strengthening forest conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable landscape practices.

The Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign 2026 builds on previous national initiatives such as the Upscaling Green Pakistan Programme and the restoration of mangrove ecosystems. The campaign not only aims to expand tree cover but also to protect biodiversity, improve livelihoods, and increase resilience to climate change. These efforts are crucial for providing shade in urban areas, protecting soil and water resources, and enhancing air quality.

The President emphasized the importance of active citizen participation, particularly from young people, educational institutions, and local communities. He urged the public to plant indigenous tree species and ensure their growth and survival, highlighting that the true success of the campaign lies in nurturing healthy trees and forests over time.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, along with Provincial Forest Departments and other partners, has been commended for their efforts in conserving Pakistan’s forests and ecosystems. The President reiterated the need for collective action to secure a healthier environment and a sustainable future for the country’s coming generations.
