Islamabad: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that Pakistan can ascend as a regional economic powerhouse by implementing comprehensive maritime reforms. He highlighted this potential at a recent seminar focused on the geopolitical dynamics affecting maritime trade in the Indian Ocean region.
According to Press Information Department, the minister underscored the Indian Ocean’s critical role as a trade corridor, linking various global markets and resources. He pointed out that the ocean’s geopolitical tensions pose significant threats to global economies and regional stability. Under directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a high-level committee was established in March to enhance the roles of Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and Gwadar Port as trans-shipment hubs.
Chaudhry noted the swift actions taken to mitigate trade risks, including record trans-shipment cargo handling at Karachi Port in March and operational reforms at Port Qasim and Gwadar Port. Significant changes in collaboration with the Federal Board of Revenue have streamlined processes, reducing container clearance times and facilitating small traders through improved logistics.
Efforts to alleviate container congestion have resulted in zero backlog at Port Qasim and enhanced operations at Karachi Port, which saw continuous activity even during the Eid holidays. The minister credited these strategic decisions with turning challenges into opportunities and positioning Pakistan as a potential regional economic leader.
Karachi Port Trust Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed added that infrastructure developments, including new train services and modern terminals, ensure the port’s capacity for future demands. The government remains dedicated to establishing Pakistan as a key maritime trade hub, fostering regional connectivity and economic growth.
