Federal Minister Reviews Wheat Procurement and Market Prices in High-Level Meeting


Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, led a high-level meeting to evaluate the wheat procurement drive, harvesting progress, and current market prices throughout the nation. The meeting, which marked the 11th session of the National Wheat Oversight Committee, aimed to ensure fair returns for farmers and maintain consumer affordability.



According to Press Information Department, the meeting included senior officials from the Ministry, provincial agriculture departments, PASSCO, and other stakeholders. The discussions focused on a comprehensive assessment of the wheat crop situation, procurement targets, and supply chain dynamics. The Minister highlighted that domestic wheat prices are aligned with international trends, ranging between Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 4,000 per maund. He assured that the government is dedicated to safeguarding growers’ interests by ensuring remunerative prices and smooth procurement operations.



Rana Tanveer Hussain expressed satisfaction with the current wheat reserves, confirming that sufficient stocks are available to meet domestic consumption needs and maintain food security. He noted that provinces have expressed confidence in achieving their wheat production targets for the current season. The Minister instructed provincial governments and relevant departments to ensure uninterrupted inter-provincial movement of wheat, emphasizing that no barriers should hinder the supply chain.



The Minister also called for transparency and efficiency in the procurement process, urging authorities to facilitate farmers with timely payments and adequate procurement centers. Discussions included measures to combat hoarding and profiteering, with strict directives to address market manipulation. Enhanced monitoring of wheat stocks and market trends was directed, along with the use of digital tools for better decision-making. Strengthening storage capacity and minimizing post-harvest losses were also emphasized.



Concluding the meeting, Rana Tanveer Hussain reaffirmed the government’s commitment to national food security, protecting farmers’ interests, and maintaining a stable wheat market for all stakeholders.
