Pakistan Criticizes Life Sentence for Kashmiri Leader Aasiya Andrabi

Islamabad: Pakistan has strongly condemned the life imprisonment sentence handed down to Kashmiri political leader Aasiya Andrabi by a Delhi court, along with 30-year sentences for her associates Fehmeeda Sofi and Nahida Nasreen. The verdict has been described by Pakistan as a miscarriage of justice and an example of ongoing suppression of fundamental rights in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to Radio Pakistan, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stated that the judgment is part of a broader pattern of politically motivated prosecutions designed to silence dissent and intimidate those advocating for the rights of the Kashmiri people. Andrabi expressed concerns regarding due process, judicial independence, and compliance with international human rights obligations.

Aasiya Andrabi has been a prominent advocate for the Kashmir cause, and her sentencing is seen by Pakistan as indicative of the diminishing space for political expression and civil liberties in the region. The foreign office spokesperson emphasized that such actions could exacerbate tensions and undermine peace and stability prospects in South Asia.

Tahir Andrabi called on the international community, including the United Nations and global human rights organizations, to take immediate notice and hold India accountable for its actions in IIOJK. He emphasized the need to protect the political, social, and human rights of the Kashmiri people, including the rights to freedom of expression and a fair trial.

The spokesperson reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast support for the Kashmiri people’s struggle for self-determination, as outlined in United Nations Security Council resolutions.
